Celebrating the Chinese New Year in advance at BBSG
24 Jan 2024
The exciting drum beats resonated throughout the BBSG campus in the early morning. where our student performers were busy preparing their lines, choreography, and costumes, getting ready for the great show on the last school day of Term 1.
Joining hands with the Parent-Teacher Association, the school also organised a New Year Fair on the same day, celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year with the whole community in advance with various festive activities.
Brilliant performances to celebrate the Year of Dragon
The first performance was the symbolic Lingnan feature for the New Year - the ‘Lion Dance’. Two professional lion dancers surprised the audience with leaps and “roars” from both sides of the auditorium, setting up the tone with traditional culture.
Three student hosts, dressed in traditional costumes, proficiently switched between Chinese and English languages while introducing the performances and infusing cheers and laughter to the audience amongst the audience.
Applause rang through the Recital Hall as students and teachers indulged in the performances.
The BBSG artists brought us sonorous recitations, energetic vocal performances and pop dance, Chinese traditional dance and musical instrument solo… It was like travelling through times, when we came from different eras in various formats and styles of performing arts, from traditional classics to the current trends.
For some of the student performers, it was their debut in performing arts, while some had already demonstrated their talents at the school’s opening ceremony back in September. All of them enjoyed the spotlight with confidence, representing BBSG’s core values of Encouragement and Talent.
The Engaging Lunar New Year Fair
Engagement booths with the flavour of Chinese Lunar New Year were arranged at the Central Boulevard of the Hub where BBSG is located, offering a wide range of activities to the community. These included Tanghulu (sugar-coated fruits), calligraphy couplets, dragon's beard candy, and sugar painting. The community could enjoy the immersive cultural atmosphere and the festive taste of those typical snacks.
What’s more, students and parents worked together to set up their class stalls. They made their own decision to bring unused or recycled items from home, or strategically purchase practical goods for sale or exchange, some set up ring-toss activity, all were doing well in running their "win-win business" for fun.
What a delightful day! We wish all had enjoyed the performances and activities as we did, and we wish the whole community a happy Spring Festival and a prosperous year with BBSG in advance.
