Master the Impossible

17 Dec 2025

In 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on what would become one of the most remarkable expeditions in human history. En route to Antarctica, his ship was trapped by pack ice, leaving the crew stranded in one of the harshest environments on earth for nearly two years. Through extraordinary leadership, courage and unwavering belief, Shackleton ensured the survival of every member of his team.

More than a century later, this spirit of resilience and courage lives on in ISP's Shackleton Society — a programme inspired by Shackleton's legacy, designed to challenge young people to confront the unknown, push beyond perceived limits, and develop the character required for an ever-changing future.

Century Hunt: Pushing the Limits in an Endurance Expedition

Last year, nearly 30 students completed their first long-distance hike, covering 25 kilometres in five hours from campus to Baiyun Mountain.

This year, the challenge expanded in both scale and ambition. Students, teachers and families from the Benenden Guangzhou community set off from the Panyu campus to undertake the Century Hunt: a demanding 100-kilometre journey completed over two days, travelling south to Nansha Temple of the Queen of Heaven.

The route led participants through city streets, woodland paths, hills and waterways, with each step offering a quiet test of endurance and determination. By the end of the journey, achievements reflected the strength of the whole community: four students and two teachers completed the full 100 kilometres over two days; nearly 30 Senior Secondary students and teachers surpassed a 50-kilometre challenge in a single day; and almost 30 Junior Secondary students and parents successfully completed a 20-kilometre hike.

Yet the most meaningful outcomes could not be measured in kilometres alone. Along the way, resilience emerged naturally, shaped by encouragement and shared purpose.

The Shackleton Hunt is not about endurance for its own sake. It is about building resilience, setting purposeful goals and developing a growth mindset through meaningful challenge. Experienced beyond the classroom, these moments shape inner strength - qualities that remain long after the journey has ended.

A Global Classroom

Without Walls

At Benenden Schools Guangzhou, the Challenge of Grit is more than just an enrichment activity — it is a cornerstone of every student's Compete Education journey. Over the past two years, students have built mental toughness, endurance, leadership and problem-solving skills through adventures such as Gobi Desert treks, urban expeditions, farming projects, summer kayaking, Spartan races, 24-hour relays, and winter camping.

Each experience pushes students beyond their comfort zones, helping them discover their potential and grow in confidence, resilience, and a global mindset — equipping them to engage with the world as capable, resilient, and future-ready global citizens.
