BBSG Excellence in Writing
02 Feb 2026
Is learning to write really that challenging?
While expression can feel like a daunting task, at BBSG, we believe every child possesses an innate gift for self-expression. Our approach transforms writing from a mere assignment into a natural flow of creativity.
This semester, our primary school students showcased their writing prowess on the national stage. Competing against tens of thousands of professionally trained students in the 7th National Writing Competition and the 2025 Chinese Fairy Tale Festival, BBSG students earned dozens of accolades across various categories - from fairy tales to narrative writing, from original works to creative adaptations.

Celina L (G4)
Behind these achievements lies our distinctive writing curriculum, built on three core principles: Building Habits, Real-World Connection, and Poetic Elevation.
Building Natural Writing Habits
For Grades 3-5, we begin by removing the pressure from writing. Our "Weekly Journal" initiative has no word count requirements or restrictions. Whether it's a single inspiring sentence, a piece of daily life, or pages of personal reflection, all are welcome and celebrated.

Journal writing excerpt: Sky Playground (Gold Award) - Ariel H (G4)
Students learn to trust their own voices and transform their experiences, discoveries, and thoughts into unique written memories. Over time, these vivid fragments become their personal repository of writing material, turning writing from an assignment into a natural habit of self-expression.
Real-World Writing Applications
Writing flourishes when connected to students' real lives and interests. Our teachers design "authentic writing tasks" that give students' words genuine purpose and deeper motivation.
Grade 4 students shared their favourite travel experiences on Mafengwo (a popular travel platform), receiving real feedback from readers nationwide.

Travels in Lushan - Grady W (G4)
Grade 5 students explored "AI-Enhanced Visual Writing," where their words transformed into tangible, shareable creations. Their story about "Hometown in 20 Years" became AI-generated videos, while their "Teacher Portraits" were converted into animated illustrations, helping students visualise the power of their writing.

Cultivating Poetic Expression
Beautiful writing requires an appreciation for language aesthetics. Our cross-disciplinary "Monthly Poetry" project, a collaboration between Chinese and English departments, guides students through four core themes: "The Unique Me," "Autumn Whispers," "Shapes of Happiness," and "Festival Feelings."

Japanese haiku on the theme "Early Autumn"
The poetry curriculum builds literary skills across different grade levels: Grade 1 begins with Visual Poetry, while Grade 2 explores creative Collage Poetry. As students progress, they master Chinese Acrostic Poetry in Grade 3, Japanese Haiku in Grade 4, and advance to sophisticated Tanka and English Sonnets in Grade 5.
This journey from visual to verbal expression enriches students' creative writing abilities and deepens their appreciation for language in both cultures.

odern adaptation of the classical poem "Autumn" - Kicky D (G5)
At BBSG, we don't believe in standardised writing templates. Instead, we help each student discover their unique voice, making writing their lens to observe the world, their outlet for emotion, their brush for creating beauty, and their lifelong companion for self-expression.
—— Ms. Jingjing Jiang,
Primary Teaching and Learning Coordinator and Chinese Lead
While AI reshapes our world, the power of personal expression remains uniquely human. At BBSG, we cherish each student's courage to share their story, and every educator's dedication to nurturing these authentic voices - because true writing comes from the heart, not algorithms.
