BBSG's Odd Socks Day - Making Caring Common
09 Nov 2023
BBSG launched Anti-Bullying Week with the theme 'Making Caring Common' recentely. The Pastoral Care and Boarding Department, together with all the teachers, jointly initiated a series of interesting activities to help students to understand the differences and similarities between individuals, to be respectful and inclusive, and also get to identify bullying and learn how to protect themselves and others when faced with or witnessing bullying.
'Odd Socks Day'
Huh? Was everyone wearing the wrong socks?
Teachers and students at BBSG were encouraged to wear two different socks on Odd Socks Day to express their uniqueness and appreciate the differences in others. We practised unity in diversity through practical actions.
Anti-bullying pledge handprints
During the assembly last Friday, students from G1 to G3 learned about the concept of bullying and strategies to counter it by reading picture books. They expressed their commitment for anti-bullying by making anti-bullying pledge handprints.
Learn to be inclusive and think from others' perspective
In addition to exposing students to relevant concepts during the activities mentioned above, the Chinese Principal Ms. Shen and the Head of Junior Secondary & Acting Head of Primary Ms. Gong introduced relevant knowledge about anti-bullying to the students, from the perspectives of victims, perpetrators, and bystanders, helping them understand both bullying and anti-bullying, raising their awareness, promoting inclusive values, and teaching them to handle interpersonal communications with a positive attitude and the correct approach.
Students in G4 and G5 learned more ways to deal with bullying by watching videos and topic sharing. Mr. Smith, the Deputy Head of Pastoral Care and Boarding, shared strategies for action under bullying with students from G6 to G8 by video sharing and a puzzle grouping activity. After guidance by homeroom teachers and spontaneous brainstorming discussions, students designed creative posters to express their views.
The themed week long activities are an epitome of Benenden's pastoral care and moral education work. In daily teaching and campus life, Benenden will continue to enhance students' awareness of self-protection and caring for others through counselling, resource sharing, hotline support, etc, and provide effective ways and channels for seeking help. In addition, Benenden will also work with parents to create a harmonious home-school atmosphere and care for the healthy growth of students through parent newsletters, parent engagement activities, Parent-Teacher Association(PTA), etc.
