Celebrating the Winter Solstice
26 Dec 2023
As the end of the year approaches, it is time to celebrate the Winter Solstice in the traditional Chinese Culture. The BBSG Culture Academy organised different handicraft activities to introduce the intangible cultural heritage in Chinese traditional culture to our students, including Chinese paper-cutting, paper pulp drawing, cloisonne enamel painting, gold foil painting on round silk fan, velvet flower and shadow puppet production.
Immersive cultural experience for Chinese traditions
In the morning assembly, Ms. Mao, our Chinese Teacher and Coordinator of BBSG Culture Academy, introduced the traditional activities of Winter Solstice, as well as the 24 Solar Terms in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. A variety of handicraft activities commenced after lunch, where students learnt the knowledge of intangible cultural heritage programmes and had hands-on practices later, immersing themselves in the celebration of this traditional festival.

Inheriting traditional culture innovatively
Each cultural activity incorporates and reflects the wisdom and techniques inherited from Chinese history, and each handicraft shows the students’ creativity and interpretation of the traditions. The artwork well demonstrated the innovative skills of our young generation, as well as the vitality of traditional culture heritage.
Over the past months, the BBSG Culture Academy has conducted different festive-themed events for the students and the community. It helps the students to gain an in-depth understanding of the profound Chinese culture, while strengthening the sense of self-identity and openness to cultural diversity. Furthermore, the selected artwork from this event will be displayed on the campus, adding a touch of traditional culture vibe to the school community.
