Exploring the World of Work
08 Jun 2024
Are your childhood career dreams different from your child’s?
According to the Future of Jobs Report released by the World Economic Forum, nearly a quarter of traditional occupations will disappear in the next five years, while nearly a quarter of entirely new professions will emerge. How should we prepare our children for an uncertain future? Is career education confined only to classroom learning or an exploration outside the classroom?
This Children’s Day, BBSG warmly welcomed the community to a vibrant “World of Work” career experience carnival, offering a unique blend of learning and fun. Participants explored both emerging and traditional professions and enjoyed themselves while gaining insights.
Tacit Knowledge Gained Through Career Experience Activities
Participants delved into a world of diverse professions, from medical simulations with real-life doctors to journalistic endeavours guided by seasoned reporters and creative floral arrangement sessions with expert florists. And the most anticipated booth was the jewellery design experience.
Led by experienced hosts, our junior reporting team conducted on-site interviews in both Chinese and English with a list of questions, experiencing the media work both in front of and behind the screen and sharpening their language expression as well as adaptability.
The two mentors of the Junior Reporting Team were very impressed. “Our Junior Reporting Teams, consisting of reporters, photographers, and a coordinator, have clearly defined roles. They're learning how to handle situations and communicate effectively before interviews, demonstrating excellent teamwork and coordination skills,” they observed.
At the live-streaming booth, students tried to understand a product from the consumer’s perspective and express core selling points to their “followers” on the other side of the camera. After several failed attempts, students realised that hosting such promotions was not as simple as they had imagined.
Student Clubs Take the Stage to Share Passion and Learnings
After half a semester of collaborative learning, student clubs such as the Handcrafts Club, the Baking Club, the History Club, and the Biology Club made their debut at the Children’s Fun Day, showcasing their accomplishments and learning outcomes.
Question from the Business Club: How do we distinguish “Good” and “Bad” Consumption?
In collaboration with the Biology Club, our Student Charity Club encouraged guests to adopt small animals, providing knowledge about their habitats and habits.
Interest paves the way for careers. Student club members, united by shared interests, are now sharing their enthusiasm and achievements with the onsite audience. As they hone their skills, they also strive to engage more like-minded peers in future explorations.
Subject Games and Challenges
Our teachers, and partners specializing in golf, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, digital art creation and more have brought their best games and challenges to engage participants. The diverse activities encompassed aspects of future professional skills, including knowledge, critical thinking, and teamwork.
“I want to be a scientist, so I’m really looking forward to the CSI experience!” Outside the CSI “Crime Scene” workshop was a long line. Little forensic experts were challenging their investigation and logical thinking skills to “crack the case”.
The Children’s FUN DAY was a departure from the traditional classroom, offering a different form of career education. Research shows that knowledge is like an iceberg, with the visible, describable written “explicit knowledge” above the surface, and the invisible tacit knowledge, acquired through experience and experimentation, flowing beneath.
Looking ahead, BBSG is committed to enriching students’ lives with more such dynamic events and innovative teaching activities, allowing them to witness, listen, and explore various career possibilities first-hand. With diverse tacit knowledge, students can develop comprehensive competitiveness, and truly be Future Ready.
In the end, on this special day for children, helping them discover lifelong passions and the paths to achieve greatness is the best Children’s Day gift we can offer.
