BBSG Inaugural Art Exhibition
06 Jul 2024
"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
- Pablo Picasso
BBSG proudly presented its inaugural art exhibition, titled "Open Hearts, Open Minds," which showcased the phenomenal artistic talents and creativity of our students. This theme directly ties into the BBSG value of OPENNESS, which has been the core focus of our Visual Arts classes throughout the year.
As an Art teacher, it is crucial to expose students to artists, cultures, and crafts beyond their usual experiences, fostering openness and enthusiasm for new knowledge. This is important to develop well-rounded and internationally minded students ready to embrace their own and other people’s diversity.

The exhibition opened to resounding success last Friday, inviting students and parents to enjoy hundreds of artworks created throughout the academic year, which showcased our students' talents and their visual arts learning journey.
Grade 1 Students explored shell design and cubic textured design using various materials, creating art rich with natural textures and organic forms.
Grades 1 and 2 students learned about New Zealand Maori Koru Art, characterised by spiral shapes symbolising life, growth, and peace, conveying dynamism and rhythm.
Grades 2 and 3 students tried unique tie-dye patterns by partially dyeing fabrics, resulting in visually random and unpredictable art.
Grade 3 students used liquid paint to create abstract effects in mushroom/fluid painting, emphasising the free expression of colour and form.
Through diverse art forms and techniques, students not only master fundamental principles such as color, line, form, and texture, but also cultivate their aesthetic sensibilities and personal expression.
Grade 4 students practised still-life sketching, honing their skills by drawing stationary objects.
Grades 4 and 5 students designed and crafted delicate accessories, reflecting their personal style and creativity.
Grade 5 students engaged in fashion design, creating clothing and accessories that coordinate lines, colours, and shapes to highlight the wearer's form.
In Grade 6, students created artworks on the theme 'Under The Sea' using techniques like pencil sketching, painting, embroidery, jewellery making, and 3D modelling.
The exhibition also highlighted the use of eco-friendly materials, such as G5A's collage semi-dimensional clothing designs made from old fabrics. This initiative aligns with our commitment to sustainability and responsible art practices.
In Grade 7, students interpreted the theme 'The Beauty of China' in diverse ways, creating traditional Chinese landscapes or modern art styles. They also tried clothing design with the theme “African Fashion,” using African Ankara fabric to make garments, marking their first experience using sewing machines.
Grade 8 students studied an artist and created projects inspired by their work, visiting K11 Mall to see Daniel Arsham's art before making sculptures and drawings in his style, involving breaking parts to reveal gems or crystals.
In every grade, we emphasise the importance of sustainability. Our students engage with recycled materials, adopt eco-friendly practices, and create artworks that reflect their deep understanding of environmental issues. Witnessing the surprise, joy, and pride on our children’s faces as they see their artworks displayed captures the true spirit of this exhibition. We are immensely proud of our students for their extraordinary achievements. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported and attended this event. Your encouragement and enthusiasm are priceless gifts to our young artists.

In the era of rapid AI advancement, art remains an irreplaceable human characteristic. Although AI tools can augment our capabilities in digital design and editing, they cannot replace the essential elements of self-expression and personal growth, and most important of all, the ability to appreciate and create art. At BBSG, our Visual Arts programme balances the use of technology with the continuation of historical art traditions, ensuring a comprehensive artistic education that echoes our vision of a COMPLETE education, providing students with lifelong happiness with arts.
As we step towards a new academic year, let’s look forward to more artistic and creative learning experiences and showcases from the BBSG community!
