BBSG's Inaugural House Champion
12 Jul 2024
As the first school year drew to a close, the BBSG community was abuzz with excitement for its year-end celebrations. Among these, the House Champion Announcement stood out as one of the most anticipated events.
What is the House System?
You may be familiar with the House System from the Harry Potter series or other English literature.
Originating in the UK, this popular structure has now been adopted by international schools worldwide, integrating staff and students from various grades to different Houses. Students earn House points by participating in House events. The House accumulating the highest points throughout the academic year earns the title of annual House Champion.
At BBSG, our four Houses are named after plants with positive symbolism, reflecting our expectations for our students. Each House comprises students and teachers from various grades. While each House has its unique characteristics, they all belong to the larger BBSG family. Students collaborate to create their own House culture, a process akin to "building a home." They work together, encourage one another, and strive for the honour of their House.
A Year of Friendly Competitions and Triumphs
Throughout the year, our four Houses have engaged in a variety of competitions and initiatives spanning academics, sports, arts, and more. This diversity lets each House member participate and contribute, fostering confidence and a sense of belonging.
Congratulations to Ginkgo House as they emerged as our inaugural House Champion!
The Secret to Success – Pink Slips
Ginkgo House secured their victory through a combination of exceptional performance in House competitions and, most significantly, through the accumulation of "Pink Slips," which contributed over 60% of Ginkgo House's points.
Ms. Louisa Shen, Chinese Principal of BBSG, unveiled the mystery behind the "Pink Slips": "BBSG adopts the 'Pink and Blue Slip' system from Benenden School in the UK, which is an integral part of our student behaviour management. Students receive Pink Slips when they act to exemplify BBSG's eight Core Values. Conversely, they may receive warnings or, in serious cases, Blue Slips. BBSG consistently emphasises awards over sanctions. As of late June this term, teachers have issued nearly three times as many Pink Slips as Blue Slips, aligning with our positive education approach."
Incorporating this into our House system emphasises the importance of well-rounded development and living out BBSG values daily. Through rewarding positive behaviours, BBSG is cultivating an inclusive and positive school culture that encourages students to be their best selves and be Future Ready.
Congratulations to all recipients of Annual Pink Slip awards. Well done!
More than Competitions –
The Value of the House System
Communicating and collaborating with people of different ages within a House enhances students' communication and cooperation skills. The House system also cultivates students' intrinsic motivation and self-control. Students can see the immediate and long-term consequences of their actions, as well as how their behaviour impacts other people. This fosters a sense of achievement and purpose, building responsibility and self-regulation.
