Dive into Fun: Student-Led Biology Week at BBSG
18 Oct 2024
Walking past the Primary Building of BBSG, you will be surprised to find a natural area perfect for biological and geographical discoveries. How many ways can we turn this into a festival of learning? Let’s see how BBSG did it in our recent Biology Week event, “Explore Our Moat.”
Science Discoveries with FUN
BBSG students excitedly participated in a series of stations. From testing soil quality to capturing bugs, each activity offered students an opportunity to dive into the wonders of nature while collaborating with their peers.
Exploring soil and water quality and learning how it affects plant life.
How many different bugs can you find? Students used magnifying glasses and DIY microscopes for a closer look.
Collecting plant samples for pressed plant art.
Enjoying a mindful moment with creative expression through nature sketching.
Beyond the fun, each station was designed to connect with different subjects, allowing students to grasp biological and environmental concepts while applying their research skills in hands-on exploration. This unique natural adventure offers an immersive interdisciplinary learning experience in the real world!
Interdisciplinary Learning
Biology: Explored through plants and insects.
Chemistry: Highlighted in water and soil analysis.
Art: Incorporated through sketching and photography.
English: Engaged with poetry writing and word searches.
Global Perspective: Emphasised through trash collection efforts.
The primary goal of this exhilarating adventure was to immerse students in nature and encourage them to learn from hands-on experiences while enhancing their curiosity and teamwork skills.
A Student-Led Initiative
Behind this engaging and creative project is BBSG’s newly formed IGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition) student team. The IGEM team members took the lead on this project, brainstorming different activity ideas, working in pairs to plan various activities, and running the stations for younger students on the day of the event.
At the same time, the BBSG Community Service Club, also formed by students, ensured safety and engagement, helping younger peers navigate the event smoothly.
"If students gain confidence in experiencing success with projects within more controlled environments like this, they will have the confidence to go out into the real world and do great things for they will believe in themselves."
——BBSG Secondary BioChem Lead: Dr. Gert Grobler
At BBSG, we believe that learning should be fun and engaging. Events like “Explore Our Moat” not only provide Secondary students with opportunities to develop their leadership and coordination skills but also offer all students unforgettable experiences that foster a love for science and nature. We look forward to more exciting activities that inspire our students to explore, learn, and enjoy the world around them.
