Discussing Global Issues in English Class

15 Nov 2024

At BBSG, we are committed to providing our students with engaging and meaningful learning experiences. These experiences extend beyond traditional classroom boundaries, empowering them to become future-ready individuals. For example, how can we incorporate "Responsible Consumption and Production," one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, into our curriculum?

Recently, some of our Junior Secondary English students showcased their learning in a remarkable exhibition centred on the concept of a Circular Economy. This event not only highlighted their creativity and understanding of sustainability but also underscored the effectiveness of our innovative English teaching methods.

The Circular Economy Project: A Student-Centric Approach

The Circular Economy Project was a unit assessment for our English class. Students selected everyday objects from around the school to explore their potential for recycling and reuse.

Sean Z and Jason H addressed the issue of food waste. They highlighted how even small items, such as snack packaging, can play a significant role in the larger narrative of waste reduction.

This project was designed to challenge students to communicate their ideas effectively, engage different audiences and persuade them of the significance of sustainability.

Comprehensive Language Learning

Through this project, students developed the essential language skills needed to write a basic five-paragraph essay. They applied this structure to improve their speaking, reading, and writing abilities.

At BBSG, we believe that language skills cannot be taught in isolation. Instead, we use Project-Based Learning (PBL), Inquiry-Based Learning, and Reflective Teaching methods to foster a comprehensive understanding of language and its practical applications. This presentation served as a holistic assessment, integrating multiple skills and abilities in English learning.

Students learn best by doing. By designing posters and preparing presentations, they engage in creative problem-solving. They also enhance their time management, conflict resolution, and communication skills.

One of the most impressive outcomes of this exhibition was the noticeable increase in students’ confidence in expressing themselves. Activities like these allowed them to become reflective learners and active members of our school community. They also reinforced their sense of responsibility toward environmental issues.
