BBSG Swimming Programme
13 Jan 2025
The swimming pool at the BBSG Sports Centre is a central attraction for both parents and students. With constant temperature and eight lanes, BBSG students can enjoy water sports year-round. In addition to excellent facilities, BBSG offers a comprehensive water sports programme led by a professional coaching team. Every student can pursue their passion here from water safety and foundational skills, to competitive swimming.
Since the beginning of the academic year, the BBSG swim team has made significant progress since the initial try-outs. They have competed against skilled opponents including, professional student-athletes, and achieved commendable results.
Fight Harder and Stronger
“It hasn't been easy,” recalled Coach Sara Chen. “The schedule was tight, the weather was cold, and more than half of the rival teams were from professional clubs. Despite these challenges, our student-athletes were fearless, giving their all in each intense competition and ultimately attaining outstanding results.”
The confidence and perseverance of the team members stem from their dedication in the pool. Since the establishment of the swim team, they have adhered to a rigorous training schedule of two hours per week. The Guangzhou Youth and Children Swimming Competition was their first city-level event. Competing against over 1,500 participants has motivated the team to work even harder for future competitions.

In the recent district-level competition, the BBSG swim team continued to achieve impressive results. Notably, Dorothy Z from Grade 6 set a personal best by winning four gold medals.
Coach Sara noted that Dorothy Z has shown remarkable progress this semester. She has honed her skills during regular training and worked diligently to correct mistakes. This dedication has allowed her to stand out among many professional competitors.
Find Your Passion in Water Sports
Sports are a vital cornerstone of BBSG’s Complete Education. Swimming is not just for those who excel in the water; it is a mandatory subject for all BBSG students, starting from Grade 1.
At the primary level, our PE team has established seven levels in the "Swimming Passport" for each student. Students are encouraged to learn backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle through engaging challenges. At the secondary level, we further develop students' professional skills, including lifesaving. Students have two consecutive swimming lessons each week, ensuring ample time for practice and learning.
Additionally, BBSG offers water polo classes as part of the regular curriculum for all students. This is also available as an Extra-curricular Activity (ECA) led by Coach Pan Ning, a national-level athlete and the men's water polo champion of the 2009 National Games.
As Ms. Sara Chen explained, water polo is an emerging sport in China, ideal for developing students’ core strength and teamwork skills. By introducing this innovative sport in collaboration with national-level athletes, we aim to support students' diverse and specialised athletic development while ensuring they have fun in the water.
From mandatory classes to Extra-curricular Activities and competitive training, we hope BBSG students will master essential skills, cultivate a mindset of water safety, and discover their passion for water sports. This will help them build a healthy physique and cultivate a lifelong sporting mindset.
