BBSG Students to CNEC National Round!

22 Jan 2025

While most students are introduced to Economics in senior secondary school, four Grade 7 students from BBSG took the stage to participate in an international economics competition. As first-time participants without a solid foundation, these students competed alongside many Grade 9-10 students. They worked diligently for three months and successfully advanced to the National Round.

The Qualifying Test at SKT-CNEC, conducted entirely in English, covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and current affairs. It assesses students’ knowledge of economics, global perspectives, and English language skills.

Mr. Antong Liu is the coach of these four students. He is a teacher at our Junior Secondary School. With qualifications in all levels of mathematics and economics training from the Cambridge Examination Board for IGCSE and A-level exams, he has extensive experience in helping students achieve outstanding academic results in these subjects. Under his guidance, the participants began weekly training sessions to familiarise themselves with the syllabus and question types. Mr. Liu also introduced The Economist and The Guardian, along with different websites and reading lists related to economics, to help the students expand their knowledge and vocabulary in this fascinating subject.

Introduction to Economics:

Opens Doors to a New Possibility

By introducing Economics at the Junior Secondary level and encouraging students to participate in what might seem like "advanced" competitions, Mr. Liu has a long-term vision: "The CNEC competition is one of the most prestigious business (economics) competitions. Awards in the senior category (AS) can help students in applying to top business and economics programmes. Exposing students to economics at an early stage can spark their interest, nurture logical and critical thinking, and develop reasoning abilities. This prepares them for future competitions while laying the groundwork for attending international programmes."

Although BBSG does not offer Economics in Junior Secondary School, these four students are already familiar with the subject.

In their English classes, they engaged in an interdisciplinary exploration of the "Circular Economy." During a study trip, they visited HKUST (GZ) to explore economic concepts in real-life contexts using VR. These engaging and innovative learning experiences have opened the door to economics for these students.

The next round of the competition will be even more challenging. Students will compete in group sessions such as “Critical Thinking,” “Quiz Bowl,” and “Super Econ.” The students are excited about the challenges ahead: “We are aiming for the Global Round.” Let’s look forward to the good news!

About CNEC

The National Economics Challenge (NEC), organised by the Council for Economics Education (CEE), is the most prestigious secondary school economics competition in the US. Established in 2000, it attracts more than 20,000 young economists from around the world each year. The global rounds, held in New York and Hong Kong, are highly regarded by Wall Street and top global universities. Many finalists receive offers from prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Oxford.

The SKT-CNEC (China National Economics Challenge) is the only event in China that qualifies participants for the NEC global rounds.
