Global Top 1% in AMC8!
10 Mar 2025
BBSG students have once again showcased their exceptional mathematical prowess in the recent AMC8 International Mathematics Competition. Our Primary and Junior Secondary students won six awards, with Hayden L (Grade 8) earning a place on the Honor Roll of Distinction (Global Top 1%). Jason H (Grade 7) and Nathan Q (Grade 8) both achieved spots on the Honor Roll (Global Top 5%). These outstanding results also secured BBSG a place on the School Merit Roll—a remarkable accomplishment for us in our second year.
About AMC
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) is sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). It annually attracts over 300,000 students worldwide, making it one of the most influential youth mathematics competitions globally. Often considered the pinnacle of international math competitions, the AMC serves as a key criterion for evaluating applicants to esteemed institutions such as Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Inclusive Teaching Pedagogy in Maths
At BBSG, excellence in mathematics is achieved through a balanced approach that combines strong fundamentals with appropriate challenges. Our regular lessons include engaging problem-solving activities. For instance, Grade 6 students take part in a weekly “Maths Challenge,” which makes problem-solving enjoyable while helping them build confidence in Maths.

Building on this strong foundation, students receive personalised instruction in academic and competition plans tailored to their unique strengths. For instance, last August, Yvonne W, then in Grade 6, achieved an outstanding A* in IGCSE Mathematics. Students interested in mathematics can also pursue advanced studies through Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), including preparation for international competitions like the AMC8. Strong competition results can enhance university applications. In addition, participating in these competitions enhances students’ mathematical skills. This provides a solid foundation for higher-level competitions and further studies in subjects like economics in Senior Secondary School.
Enhancing Skills and Abilities Through Competitions
At BBSG, we focus on student growth rather than just achievements.
The Junior Secondary Mathematics competition teachers, Mr. Rock Chen, Mr. Antong Liu and Ms. Cuckoo Du also shared their insights on learning for competitions:
The AMC8 covers a wide range of topics. It goes beyond standard curricula like IGCSE Mathematics. The preparation process helps students expand their mathematical knowledge. It also fosters analytical thinking, enabling them to understand core concepts before exploring multiple solution paths.
Notably, among over 20 BBSG participants, Oliver S (Grade 6) competed alongside Grade 7 and 8 students, receiving the Achievement Roll and serving as a significant inspiration to the student community.
Congratulations once again to our award winners. As we celebrate their success in the competition, we also recognise the courage, perseverance, and genuine appreciation for mathematics that students cultivate through these challenges.
