Student Exchange Programme at Benenden School

17 Mar 2025

United by a shared commitment to Complete Education, BBSG and Benenden School in the UK have forged a strong partnership. Among various collaborative initiatives, the student exchange programme launched this academic year has been eagerly anticipated by parents, teachers, and students alike. Following the visit of four Benenden girls to BBSG in October 2024, ten BBSG students and two teachers embarked on a 10-day exchange journey to the UK in early 2025.

Over the course of two weeks, students immersed themselves in a different cultural and linguistic environment, exploring new subjects like Philosophy and trying traditional British sports such as Netball and Lacrosse. They also discovered nearby medieval architecture and confidently shared aspects of Chinese culture in their classes. It was a journey of new discoveries and lasting friendships.

Let’s revisit their adventure through their journals and perspectives.

First Impressions of Benenden School:

A Century of History and Culture

Stepping onto Benenden's grounds, we were immediately immersed in its rich history and cultural heritage. Every brick and building seemed to tell a story. In the school museum, we noticed a newspaper advertisement that revealed how the school estate was sold for £3000 in the early 19th century, prior to its purchase by the School’s Founders in 1924, marking the start of Benenden’s century-long journey in Complete Education. This profound heritage sparked our curiosity-what is it like to learn in a school with over 100 years of history?

Learning at Benenden: Moments of Discovery and Growth

During our stay, students immersed themselves in a dynamic and stimulating learning environment. Classes encouraged exploration and critical thinking. For instance, science lessons began with questions like, "What’s the chemical composition of salt?" PE sessions also introduced them to sports like lacrosse.

Teachers here guided students through extraordinary demonstrations of knowledge while providing explanations and connections. This approach benefits students by fostering critical thinking, deepening factual understanding, and encouraging the formation of personal opinions.

Today in our science lesson, we had chemistry. The teacher demonstrated how different metals react in water, helping us understand ‘active’ metals. It was really interesting!

Although initially nervous in the unfamiliar environment, the encouraging atmosphere and friendly nature of Benenden's teachers and students greatly helped our pupils adapt quickly to the English learning environment.

*A "Reunion" with the four Benenden girls who visited BBSG last October

As one of the only four boys at Benenden, I was a bit nervous before arriving. However, the girls are so nice and welcoming that I feel much more at ease now.

Cultural Immersion:

From Language Skills to International Friendships

Pastoral care is an essential aspect of Benenden’s Complete Education, evident in everyday details—from a pet photo wall in the boarding house to discussions about homesickness during assemblies. We were also invited to a special afternoon tea with the Headmistress and teachers before our departure. These moments demonstrated that an international mindset extends beyond language fluency, encompassing mutual understanding, respect for differences, and the forging of supportive relationships.

A particularly touching moment occurred in the boarding house when Benenden surprised Angel H with a birthday celebration. The smiles and warmth of that night transcended language and cultural barriers, creating an unforgettable memory for Angel.

My buddy is amazing. She is really friendly and kind. She invited me to her classes and activities and even gave me a little present from Japan. Her support has been invaluable whenever I’ve encountered challenges in class.

At the farewell party, students were in tears as they prepared to depart. The two-week exchange programme marked the beginning of new friendships and future dialogues. It also encouraged them to reflect on how the British values of "courtesy" and "care" bring warmth and joy to both themselves and those around them.

Beyond the classroom, students visited the 14th-century Bodiam Castle, enjoyed hot chocolate in the medieval town of Rye, and explored the British Museum and the National Gallery. Throughout the trip, they gained confidence speaking English and developed a deeper appreciation of both local and global culture, even while shopping for gifts for their families.
