Education is about nurturing unique individuals. At BBSG, our Complete Education is best illustrated through our students' learning journeys.

 

We’re excited to introduce our "Student Spotlight" series. It aims to capture our students' precious moments and stories. They truly embody the many facets of excellence and showcase the limitless possibilities at BBSG.

Our first feature focuses on Kate J (Year 8). She is one of our founding students and an ARCH scholarship recipient. Though naturally reserved, Kate has earned a special place in the hearts of her teachers and friends as a "hidden gem." Her journey at BBSG reflects comprehensive growth through mentorship opportunities, curious exploration, cultural heritage, and confidence.

Discovering Her Potential

Kate exemplifies academic excellence across all subjects. During the ARCH scholarship nomination process, Ms. Ally Xuan, BBSG QUEST counsellor Lead, noted that Kate’s name was frequently mentioned by her subject teachers. “We have many students with high academic achievements, but to be honest, I didn’t initially see Kate as a strong candidate. I was quite curious about her,” she said.

What truly sets Kate apart is her resilience. Her mathematics teacher and co-homeroom tutor, Ms. Sylvia Chai, highlights Kate's remarkable persistence when faced with challenges: "She won't give up until she finds a solution. We believe that every student requires a different approach. In Kate’s case, we've learnt to give her space for self-directed learning while providing guidance at crucial moments." This approach has helped build her confidence and self-motivation.

During our interview, after several recordings, Kate still wasn't satisfied. "I’d like to try again", she said. There’s a tenacity in her that grows stronger with each attempt. It pushes her to step outside her comfort zone and make continuous progress.

At BBSG, we recognise that every student is unique and has their own passions. It's essential to acknowledge these individualities and needs at different stages of development. By providing appropriate guidance and ample space, we support students in exploring, discovering, and pursuing their dreams and unlocking their potential.

Be Curious, Be Brave, Be Myself

Kate dreams of becoming a scientist. Though she hasn’t chosen a specific field yet, she enjoys every aspect of exploring science.

With a particular passion for entomology, she talks about insects as treasures. She was invited to share her enthusiasm in a biology class. Inspired by this, our QUEST team encouraged her to start an "Insect House" project. The project aims to promote biodiversity while enhancing her profile for future university applications.

On the other hand, her love for Chinese calligraphy reflects a deep connection to traditional culture. Kate actively participates in Culture Academy events. She proudly shared her calligraphy skills with students in the UK during her visit to Benenden School as part of our Student Exchange Programme. She even brought a set of calligraphy tools as a gift for her buddy in the UK.

“I believe it’s very meaningful to share the beauty of Chinese traditional art,” Kate shared with us. She also plans to establish a calligraphy club this year. This will help her combine her passion for the art with the development of leadership skills.

"Kate's enthusiasm for both scientific inquiry and traditional arts perfectly embodies our educational philosophy," says Ms. Ally Xuan. "I believe in the power of the arts for well-being and humanity. The fusion of cultural appreciation and scientific curiosity nurtures well-rounded individuals prepared for the future."

At BBSG, Kate has found a nurturing environment that allows her to genuinely express herself, explore different interests, and grow with confidence.
