Maths Learning at BBSG Primary
31 Mar 2025
Every year, Pi Day is a global celebration of maths in honour of π. This year's Pi Day at BBSG held special significance. More than 60 students from Grades 3-5 transformed into event planners, creating their own mathematical carnival.
From designing posters to creating interactive activities, students didn't just learn maths—they lived it. This student-led celebration exemplifies our approach to maths education: it encourages students to view the real world through a mathematical lens, think critically using mathematical reasoning, and articulate their observations in mathematical language. By mastering both Chinese and English, students gain a deep understanding of concepts and apply interdisciplinary knowledge and methods to solve real-world problems.

The Power of Bilingual Maths
At BBSG Primary, maths goes beyond language barriers. Our distinctive bilingual approach transforms maths learning into a cultural exploration. It provides crucial support for students during their formative language development years. Research shows that bilingual learning environments promote cognitive development and language acquisition, especially in the primary school years.
The purpose of bilingual maths extends beyond language benefits. It also fosters students’ overall mindset and literacy in both language and maths. Students engage with mathematical concepts in both Chinese and English through specially designed bilingual learning materials. This approach broadens their understanding and allows them to explore how different societies approach mathematical thinking.
*Students have bilingual assignments and weekly practices on the IXL platform
This approach not only prepares students for international education but also fosters cross-cultural thinking skills. It also develops a mathematical mindset, both of which are essential for their global adventures.
Singapore Maths Meets Inquiry-Based Learning
How can we make maths both engaging and meaningful? BBSG integrates the Singapore Maths methodology with inquiry-based learning. This approach fosters a dynamic learning environment where theory is applied through practice.
"Let's Talk About" - Captivating introductions that pique curiosity
For example, our "Pirate's Treasure" activity turns the concepts of division and remainders into an exciting treasure-sharing adventure.
"Learning Experiences" - Practical exploration
Students work in teams, using manipulatives and real-world scenarios to explore mathematical principles firsthand.
*Grade 5 students exploring possibilities through class and group activities
"Do and Learn" - Real-world application
Teachers present real-life problems that link mathematical concepts to everyday situations. This approach helps students recognise the practical value of what they are learning.

In contrast to traditional teaching pedagogies, this practice-based approach emphasises critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students don't simply memorise formulas. Instead, they develop logical reasoning abilities, communication skills, and collaborative working strategies.
At BBSG, maths is transformed into an exciting adventure for primary students, rather than just a set of calculations. They develop into confident problem-solvers, innovative thinkers, and future leaders with a global perspective. Through our distinctive combination of bilingual instruction and interactive learning methods, we're preparing students not only for academic achievement but also for the challenges of tomorrow's world.
