The BBSG Roadmap to English Excellence
14 Apr 2025
At BBSG, we believe that language acquisition flourishes when English transcends textbook learning to become a living, breathing part of daily life. Rather than merely memorising vocabulary and grammar rules, students should experience English through natural conversation, reading, and exploration. This immersive approach helps them think and express themselves like native speakers.
To achieve that, we utilise a range of high-quality programmes and platforms to support our students' English development in a language-immersive environment.
Global Learning Resources
Beyond our well-stocked library of English books, BBSG provides students with extensive online resources. We've carefully selected four leading global English learning platforms to support learners at every stage of their journey:
Phonics: Read Write Inc.
Read Write Inc. is a highly regarded phonics programme used in over a quarter of schools across the United Kingdom. This programme is designed to embed phonics sounds into students' daily reading habits, ensuring they develop strong foundational literacy skills. Phonics involves not just recognising sounds but also applying them in writing.
Online Reading: myON
We use myON as our digital reading platform to provide students with engaging, level-appropriate reading material. Each week, students are assigned approximately five books based on their Lexile* level as part of their English assessment. myON offers several valuable features, including interactive quizzes to assess comprehension, audio support to aid pronunciation, and voice recording for students to practice fluency.
*The Lexile Framework for Reading is an educational tool in the United States that uses a measure called a Lexile to match readers with reading resources such as books and articles.
Library Reading: Accelerated Reader
This functions as an extension of myON, providing students with access to physical books from the school library. Books are categorised by Lexile level as well. After finishing a book, students can complete an online quiz to assess their understanding. Successfully completed quizzes earn points, which contribute to their Lexile target and help track their progress in English.
English Skills Practice: IXL
We also incorporate IXL, an online platform offering a wide range of interactive English activities. IXL supports students in practising and reinforcing classroom learning, developing essential English skills, and accessing prior knowledge to strengthen long-term retention.
Making English Come Alive
You can’t learn a language without using it. At BBSG, English isn't just a subject—we’ve built it into an integral part of campus life:
Every two months, students compete in the myON and Accelerated Reader challenge, where the student and class who reads for the most minutes is recognised for their dedication to reading.
The Find the BBSG Bear Game is a creative initiative where students practise English naturally while searching for our school mascot.
Additionally, the BBSG Bilingual Anchor video series encourages students to share global culture with their peers in English.
School-Family Partnership
The home environment represents students' primary exposure to English outside the classroom, and the synergy between school and parents can significantly amplify learning outcomes. At BBSG, we forge strong partnerships with parents through regular workshops and shared reading analytics, enabling them to stay aligned with their child's learning progress.
Our Parent-Teacher Workshops allow parents to experience the software and resources we use firsthand, ensuring they understand the purpose of each tool and how it contributes to student learning and final grades.

While there are no shortcuts in language learning, BBSG is committed to paving an engaging and rewarding journey for every student. Upcoming events, such as the inter-school "Battle of the Books" competition and World Book Week activities, continue to inspire enthusiasm for English learning across our campus. We look forward to being inspired by our English learners!
