BBSG Student Spotlight Series: EP03
From Editor
Jowett Z is a talented boy who dreams of becoming either a “mathematician with tennis expertise” or a professional tennis player. At BBSG, he has flourished, growing both in achievements and character, becoming someone he’s proud of.

The Race Against Time
This journey has never been easy.
For most students, the school day ends with the bell. For Jowett, it’s only half-time. His afternoons include two hours of intensive tennis training plus physical conditioning — at least 15 hours a week in total — a demanding routine he has maintained for two years, rain or shine.
Jowett seems to have endless energy for sport. Beyond tennis, he also learned to swim at BBSG and discovered a passion for climbing — his first experience with the sport. The school’s diverse sports programme has helped him find new interests and push his physical limits.
Training often finishes at 8 pm, followed by homework. Despite such a busy schedule, he rarely falls behind academically. He utilises every moment — resting during commutes and completing assignments on the go. Managing 24 hours efficiently has become second nature to this 11-year-old.
Yet, he sees this as normal: “I’ve seen many amazing players on the court. If they can do it, why can’t I?”
His parents observe his growth with a mix of pride and concern: “His time management has improved dramatically.” Additionally, his homeroom teacher, Ms. Denise Jiang, also the Key Stage Leader for Grades 3–5, pays close attention to each student’s development despite her busy schedule.
Ms. Jiang ensures Jowett doesn’t skip meals for tennis, helping him develop better nutritional habits. She also coordinates his sports activities and even attends his matches on weekends.
With support from family, teachers, and coaches, Jowett gradually learned to balance the pressures of academics and sport.

The Desire to Win
Like any athlete, Jowett has a strong desire to succeed. When he won silver at the 2025 GBA Cup, he was disappointed — he aimed for gold. His teachers noticed his ambition and determination.
Ms. Josie Ji, his Maths teacher, says Jowett’s mental agility matches his physical ability. He often finds alternative solutions to problems, even different from those of his teacher. BBSG’s inclusive programme encourages students to develop their talents through competitions and activities. With his parents’ support, Jowett challenged himself with the AMC8, a junior secondary-level contest, narrowly missing the award by only two points. He also achieved the gold award (top 8% worldwide) in the Junior Mathematical Challenge last year.
But Jowett’s growth extends beyond competition. He enjoys challenges but is also eager to help others — teaching classmates problem-solving or mediating conflicts on the court. PE teacher Mr. Oliver He comments: “In sports, conflicts happen. But Jowett manages them remarkably well — he follows rules and uses the methods he's learned to control his emotions and resolve issues. That’s exceptional for his age.” At BBSG, sports education emphasises both athletic skills and character building.
This cool boy is now one of the most popular students in his year, making friends across different grades, showing that a true champion can pursue goals and support others.

The Endless Possibilities
As a founding family, Jowett’s father reflects on his two years at BBSG, noting how excellent teaching, world-class facilities, and a nurturing environment have built his confidence, resilience, and empathy. They’re particularly proud of his achievements beyond their expectations.
Without prior drama experience, Jowett stood out from over 60 audition candidates and took the lead role in the primary production of Peter Pan. Initially intimidated by the English script, and despite his mother's concerns about time management, Jowett took on the challenge with encouragement from Ms. Jiang.
In the spotlight, this court champion revealed a new dimension through nuanced character interpretation and emotional expression.
Drama classes opened new perspectives for Jowett. He recalls a particularly impactful lesson: "Playing a janitor taught me that every profession deserves respect."
His English improved significantly during rehearsals, leading to his participation in the Primary Bilingual Anchor Programme, where he fluently presented the history of the Silk Road.
His father shares his pride: “Jowett asked us to meet his art teacher during our parent-teacher conference. Through regular updates, we’ve also learned about his involvement in STEAM, arts, sports, and more. These diverse experiences have helped him discover his true passions and develop into his own unique person. It’s the kind of education journey I could only hope for.”
From tennis and other sports to Maths, English, and drama — Jowett’s journey at BBSG exemplifies our philosophy of A Complete Education. His story is still unfolding. One day, he’ll no doubt surprise us once again with new talents and achievements.
