BBSG Theatre Productions

11 May 2024

BBSG celebrated the success of the first annual Theatre Production Season as students showcased their immense talent and passion through two remarkable performances, "Swamped" by students in Grades 1-4 and a 40-minute stage play "Scoundrels and Scallywags" by students in Grades 5-8. Both productions revolved around the theme of "Openness," also known as one of the BBSG values, taking the audience on an unforgettable journey of laughter, music, and immersive storytelling.

In six mesmerising shows, the audience experienced joyous singing, dancing, and the magic of live theatre. In the black box theatre, they were immersed in the enchanting ambience of lights, sounds, and the proximity of the performers, truly becoming part of the unfolding drama. But when lights were out, audience left and shows ended, there is more we want to deliver than the memory of these spectacular performances.

“I think the biggest challenge for me was memorizing the lines because my character had a long English monologue at the beginning, I really struggled for a long time. A tip from my teacher was to record my lines and play them back wherever and whenever I could. It's like listening to a song. If you keep listening to it, eventually you'll be able to sing along with it.”

The linguistic immersion in full English scripts not only enhanced their English language proficiency but also instilled confidence in their ability to communicate effectively. The theatrical experience also fostered a deep appreciation for literature and character understanding. As one student eloquently expressed,

“My character is a party queen, so in the play, she's portrayed as someone trendy, fashionable, and super cool. She's also a bit eccentric in personality, so during rehearsals, I learned to embody that vibe and just to be her as much as I could.”

A chance to “live another life” through character, is one of the most fascinating parts of being in a play. Providing chances for students to understand different characters and experience lives like that not only ignites their imagination but also nurtures their appreciation for different perspectives.

From BBSG to the World Stage

At our partner school Benenden UK, drama is also an important part of holistic education, students have opportunities to work with professionals and shine on school or even national theatre stages.

As Mr Delano, Director of Performing Arts said after the productions, “I’m extremely proud of all the students for their successful performances. Drama is a mandatory subject for BBSG students from Grades 1-7. We do this because we believe in the power of drama to increase the student's creative potential, their ability to work together, and their confidence on stage. Our students achieved more than that today. Congratulations!”
